An excerpt from Pursued By the Wolf (A Werewolf’s Curse #5)
Carson leaned against the door jamb of the only escape from the over-stuffed room. The number of bodies in there exceeded the fire limit posted on the wall, but the Fire Chief didn’t seem to notice. After all, all the important people in town were here. It’d be impossible to turn someone away without political ramifications. Yep, the emergency committee had certainly gone all out. They’d called in the principal of the school, the heads of various municipal departments, every description of volunteer leader, and of course, someone from the hospital: Lisa Stuart.
Carson’s wolf wagged his tail at the sight of her. He hadn’t expected her at this meeting, but it made sense. After years of working in a big city emergency room, she had more experience in dealing with trauma and emergencies than the big boys at the head of the table. When she’d spotted him before the meeting, she’d nodded at him with polite indifference, but he hadn’t missed the way her tongue darted out to moisten her lips or the soft pink flush washing over her skin.
Ever since Lisa returned to town, they’d been dancing around one another. She kept insisting that they remain friends, but friends wasn’t a part of Carson’s vocabulary when it came to Lisa. He and his wolf knew she was their mate. Was it like this for all former lovers? Or was it stronger because he was a werewolf?
Unfortunately Lisa still refused to entertain the idea.
Her long flowing brown hair tumbled over her shoulders in a delicious mess, as if she’d tumbled out of bed in a rush in order to make the meeting. What would it look like after he’d had her in his bed and rocked her hard?
A small lock of hair swung over her face, and his fingers itched to tuck it back into place. He could still remember the smooth, glossy texture of it. She shifted under the weight of his gaze and glanced back at him. Her slight smile held secrets, and he wished he could ask her what she was thinking. Damn, even the way she stroked the length of her pen turned him on. His wolf urged him to draw closer to her, put his hand on her, and claim her as his.
And if he did that, she’d probably grab Chief Jenson’s gun and shoot him.
